I found that printable bird feeder plans are such a practical solution to keep them from getting lost. There are a lot of books and magazines on the market about bird feeders but they eventually get lost or damaged in the making of the bird houses.

I remember when I was in fourth grade, I had to do a project in school. My dad and I decided to make a bird feeder. He had purchased a book with bird feeder plans in it and he told me I would be allow to pick which one I wanted and that we would make it together.

Well, when the time came to do the project, guess what, he could not find the book anywhere. Turned out that he finally remembered that he let a friend borrowing it a few months before and he could not get the hold of him. How embarrassing! I was waiting outside while he was searching the whole house for the book.

He finally decided to go to a book store and buy a new one. It was all right but the new book got really dirty after being in the workshop for a while and after I got my dirty fingers all over it. Then it got lost again. This was twenty five years ago and we did not have this thing we have today: the internet.

My dad went through the same scenario last week but this time with my height year old son. He saw all the bird feeders and bird houses in his yard and he asked him if they could make one together. Sure! This time he was so well prepared for this he looked like a high tech grandpa.

He has this woodwork plans database access on the internet. So they went together on the computer and started looking at all the bird feeder plans available. My son wanted to do them all, my dad just wanted to do one for the time being, so my son picked his favorite one. Then all he had to do was to print it out! He even printed two copies so my son could keep one to show his project in class.

Then they went outside in the workshop together and with left over pieces of wood, they were able to make the bird feeder together following the plan. My son loved it, he was marking the wood pieces and helping to put them together.

When I came back to pick him up, they showed me the nice bird feeder they had made. I told my dad that the plans were a lot easier to get the hold of that when I was little, and we both remembered the story of the book.

But sometimes it feels like all we're doing is feeding squirrels...and what they don't eat, they seem to destroy. "Squirrel-proof" commercial feeders can be expensive, and squirrels have a positive genius for overcoming the obstacles they use. But this make-it-yourself squirrel resistant feeder is a great kids' project...and when the squirrels tear it up, it's cheap and easy to replace! Start with an empty bleach bottle that's been thoroughly cleaned. Carefully cut three large holes in the sides of body of the bottle, about two inches from the bottom...and fill it with sunflower seeds. Drill a small hole in the center of the bottle cap and thread about two feet of thin wire through it, coiling the end to form a knot. Put the cap on the bottle...bend the wire over at the top... and hook it over a branch or clothesline as far from a tree trunk as possible. To make the project even more fun, you can paint the feeders up in your favorite designs! I'm sure the squirrels will figure out this feeder sooner or later... but they'll leave it alone for a while. I guess looking down at the feeder from the branch, they can=t see the seed...and the thin wire doesn't give them much to grip onto. But if they discover a way and tear it up...you get the fun of making another one!

Many people enjoy putting out birdseed for their feathered neighbors. However, squirrels also are attracted to the food and squirrels, like many animals, are very resourceful and determined when it comes to securing food. Their ability to jump and climb allows them to easily get into bird feeders, even those that people have tried to strategically place out of their reach. Putting out separate squirrel feeders that are conveniently located for them also does not prevent them from raiding bird feeders. Bird lovers have, in turn, over the years devised better feeders. Primary bird feeders squirrel proof strategies are to:

Put bird feeders away from trees or branches within jumping distance for squirrels. This is often done by mounting feeders on poles that are set in or on the ground. Of course, this presents a new problem: the squirrels can try to climb the bird feeder poles! A couple of things can be done to make it hard for the squirrels to climb up to the feeder. Some people have tried adding vaseline to a pole to make it too slippery to climb, but this isn't effective for long and is certainly messy. PVC piping has also been used to support pole-mounted feeders since its slick surface is hard to climb.

Add physical barriers like squirrel baffles to a bird feeder pole and/or add wire caging around the feeder housing. Squirrel baffles are commonly used to deter the critters from climbing up the pole for a pole-mounted feeder since they are cheap. These tend to be only partially effective by themselves, though. You would think that wire cages around tubular feeders would keep the squirrels from being able to reach the birdseed. These are not as attractive aesthetically, which is annoying if you would like to photograph your bird buddies. The wire cages can also be defeated by persistent squirrels. If you don't believe me, just try a quick search on YouTube for bird feeders squirrel proof.

Use feeders with weight sensors. Sophisticated bird feeders featuring weight sensitive perches have also been introduced. These can sense the weight of a squirrel and respond by closing feed ports or tipping or spinning the feeder. Closing the ports makes it hard for a squirrel to steal birdseed and tipping or spinning motions make it hard for a squirrel to stay mounted on the feeder. Closing access ports is not always as effective as it sounds, however, since squirrels can figure out how to swing these models sideways to shake the seeds out. Again, squirrels like other animals are very determined when it comes to securing food! Feeders that are designed to spin when the weight of a squirrel is detected can effectively drive the squirrel off without harming it. These are also more expensive to buy, but can be worth it in savings on birdseed and aggravation. Many people also like watching the squirrels take a spin on the feeder!
